EMELIA Gorecka and Annabel Gummow staked their claims for a place in the Great Britain team for the European Under 20 Championships in Estonia in a superb 5000m in the opening Grand Prix fixture writes Kevin Fahey.
The race, which incorporated the UK Championships and European trials for under 20 women, was one of the best of the night and of the top six none was older than 21.
Furthermore the competitiveness of the race also ensured that the top ten all ran personal bests and some of the thanks for that must go to Hattie Dean for a superb pace making job in the early stages.
She took the field through 2k in 6mins 22secs and 3k in 9:35 and when her job was done Gorecka stepped up to turn the screw. But she wasn’t allowed to run away from the field with last year’s champion Emma Pallant, Shaftesbury Barnet’s Beth Potter, Leigh’s Lauren Howarth, Dundee Hawkhill’s Eilish McColgan, making her debut and Gummow, who had made a great recovery after losing touch in the middle of the race, all bunched behind.
At the bell in 14:42 Pallant loomed ominously on the shoulder of her training partner – both women are coached by Mick Woods – but when she kicked down the back straight Gorecka also raised her pace a did Howarth, Potter and Gummow.
Entering the home straight Gorecka used all her strength to ease clear to win in 15:51.20 while both Howarth and Gummow over-hauled Pallant to record big PBs. The first eight women also broke 16 minutes.
“That is only my second 5000m so I am delighted,” said Gorecka. “It was nice to show that I can produce a strong finish and proves that I am developing as an athlete all the time.”
The women’s 1500m was a close contender for race of the night as 16-year-old Chelmsford runner Jessica Judd went top of the UK All-Time Under 17 women’s list with a stunning run of 4mins 14.21secs supplanting Bridget Smyth’s time of 4:15.20 set in 1984.
What made the run even more impressive was that Judd won the A race, beating runners of more experience and also did it in her inimitable way leading from the front once the pacemaker had dropped out.
Passing through 800m in 2mins 15secs and reaching the bell in 3:08 Judd had the likes of Stevie Stockton, Stacey Smith, making a late decision to run after a disappointing 800m and Irish runner Kelly McNeice lurking on her shoulder and waiting to pounce.
But Judd is not a girl easily beaten as first she held off Stockton off the top bend and then repelled another late attack by Smith in the final 50 metres before lunging across the line to claim victory by just one one –hundredth of a second from Smith with Stockton third
“I am delighted,” said Judd. “I am gradually improving all the time and bringing down my times at 800m and 1500m so I have to be happy with the way it has been going.”
Judd must have one eye on the World Youth Games and on her current form she will have a great chance of competing against the Africans and challenging for a medal.
The women’s 1500m B race saw Newbury’s Sophie Crumly better her PB for the second time in a week. At the Loughborough Games Crumly clocked 4:30.13 for 11th place; six days later she smashed that time by almost seven seconds to win in 4:23.88secs after kicking past Emily Stewart in the closing 200 metres.
“I’m ecstatic,” said Crumly. “After 4:30 at Loughborough I knew I had a faster time in me but this is brilliant. I won a C race last year so this is my best win in a BMC event.”
One of the most eagerly awaited races of the night was the women’s 800m but despite boasting an entry of six women under 2mins 02secs the race failed to sparkle.
At the bell the pacemaker was 15 metres clear of the pack – from which Alison Leonard stepped off the track – and then it was a cat-and-mouse affair with non-one wanting to take the initiative.
So it was former world youth and world juniors representative Lynsey Sharp who had most reason to be satisfied as she added victory to her success in the Loughborough International to prove that her two years absence from the sport hasn’t diminished her racing brain.
The 800m C race also saw a PB of 2:09.1 from winner Amanda Campbell, who was so pleased she roared in delight as she crossed the line.
“And at 7 this morning she wasn’t even going to come as she didn’t feel she was good enough to take part,” said coach Liz McColgan.
Additionally Welsh runner Ffion Price, 16, smashed her PB by virtually seven seconds to win the C race and in the D race 14-year-old Emily Jenkinson was a fraction outside her PB.
British international Andy Baddeley professed himself happy with his opening race of the season with a comfortable win the men’s 800m A race in a time of 1:48.56.
“Everything this season is geared towards the World Championships in South Korea,” said Baddeley.
With the blustery conditions dominating pre-race chatter it was perhaps a surprise that the meeting opened with two big PBs in the men’s 800m.
The I race was the first of the evening and Notts AC runner James Moroney powered clear on the second lap for victory in 1:55.85, slicing four seconds off his PB.
“It was definitely worth coming to Manchester for that, I’m delighted,” said Moroney.
Perhaps taking inspiration from that Bristol & West AC’s Andrew Wood stepped out next to smash his personal best by four seconds to win the H race in 1:52.72 and give himself a nice 20th birthday present (May30th).
“I only raced the 800m once last year and have been running 1500m so to come out with that is brilliant,” said Wood. “I knew 800m would be my distance and I’m sure I can go quicker if I can get into a quicker race at the next BMC meeting.”
In the B race City of Norwich’s Rick Ward showed he is making a recovery from a back injury that has troubled him for over a year with victory in 1:51.20.
“That was only my second serious race in two years and while I still cannot train like I want to it is just nice to be back racing again and I’m happy with that time tonight,” said Ward.
Behind Ward former British international Anthony Whiteman completed his first race of the outdoor season with a time of 1:52.58 in fifth place.
“I’m happy with that but I don’t have pleasant memories of this place as this is where my career ended,” said Whiteman.

Brue Raeside’s determination to play a waiting game paid dividends as the Notts AC runner claimed victory in the 1500m A race with a personal best time of 3:41.69.
The lead swapped hands between David Proctor, who was the only man to follow the pacemaker and then Steve Mitchell before Reaside emerged from the chasing pack to hit the front in the final 200 metres.
“I have messed up 1500m races so often in the past that it was time I learned from my mistakes so I was determined to run more sensibly today,” said Raeside.
“A PB of 3:41 is a half decent time for a 29-yer-old but I need to be doing better.”
The next three runners all claimed PBs with Luton’s Dan Clorley runner-up, Irish runner Paul Robinson third and Mitchell fourth.
One of the biggest PBs of the night came in the men’s 1500m B race with Adam Cotton slashing seven seconds off his previous best.
The 19-year-old produced a very strong lat lap to hold off Irishman Eion Everard to clock 3:44.69, well inside the European Junior qualifying standard of 3:48.
“That’s amazing,” said Cotton, who is based in Loughborough while taking a gap year and is coached by John Nuttall.
“I had never really run a proper 1500m before and didn’t know what to expect but it didn’t feel that hard so I’m really pleased.
“I already have the European qualifying standard for 800m and I’ll be sticking to that distance for the championships.”

Chris Carter, of Enfield & Haringey, delivered a strong finish to clock his second fastest time ever to win the 1500m D race in 3:50.97, just three one-hundredths of a second off his best.
“I’m consistent so I am happy with that,” said Carter.
In third was a delighted St Albans’ runner James McMurray, who was chasing the World Youth Games qualifying standard of 3mins 53secs and finished well inside with a PB of 3:51.69.

The E race was even quicker with Shildon junior Cameron Boyek , running his first BMC race in two years, striding clear of the field over the last 600 metres for victory in 3:49.45 to carve five seconds off his PB.
“I am really pleased with that and there is definitely more to come,” said Boyek. “That last 600 metres I was out on my own so I know I can get 3mins 48secs, which is the qualifying standard for the European Juniors.”
Finishing strongly former English Schools’ steeplechase champion Charlie MacLean clipped three seconds off his PB with 3:53.59 for second.
The C race was won by 21-year-old Luke Minns, of Blackpool, Wyre and Fylde, in a time of 3:47.94, just 0.62secs off his 2010 best.
A new BMC under 20 men’s record, six men under 14 minutes and a personal best of 13:48.94 for Tom Humphreys underlined the quality off the men’s 5000m A race in the penultimate event of the evening.
Andy Vernon’s pacemaking ensured the race soon became spread out and by the closing stages it was clear victory was between Humphreys and Leeds City’s James Walsh. Walsh pushed hard but had no answer to Humphreys’ kick off the bend as he strode to victory though the Leeds runner also claimed a PB breaking 13:50 for the first time.
“I was really nervous before the race as I haven’t trained on the track yet and didn’t know what I would do tonight,” said Humphreys.
“When my calves started to tighten up after three laps I thought I could be in real trouble but I dug in and I’m delighted to come away with a PB like that.”
It was no surprise that Hay was the fastest finisher of the field scorching around the final circuit to break 14 minutes for the first time with 13:57.16 to carve over five seconds off the previous mark of 14:02.29 that he set himself last year.
“I am now top of the under 20 rankings for 1500m and 5000m so I’ll keep my options open as regards the Europeans,” said Hay.
Hay reckons he can go quicker over 5000m later in the season and revealed he has another target in mind.
“Mo (Farah) did 13:56 when he was my age so it would be catch up with him,” added Hay.
New Marske’s 17-year-old Mark Shaw marked his debut in the C 5000m with a solid 14:35.53 after taking control in the final mile.
“I don’t think that was a bad debut but I still think I have an outside chance of breaking the World Youth Games qualifying mark of 8:16 for the 3000m
